The event, which drew residents from across the region, was an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at Minnesota’s first new mine in nearly 50 years
[NASHWAUK, MN] – On Thursday, June 19, Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (Mesabi Metallics) welcomed more than 370 community members and local leaders to an open house and town hall event to showcase the company’s progress on its state-of-the-art mine, beneficiation plant and pellet plant in Nashwauk, Minnesota.
The event featured a public town hall meeting, a guided tour of the Mesabi Metallics site and an after party catered by Mucho Si in Nashwauk, accompanied by live music performed by local Nashwauk musician Kim Nagler. Attendees heard directly from Mesabi Metallics leadership about the company’s progress, environmental stewardship, commitment to the community and its long-term vision for sustainable mining on the Iron Range.
“We’re proud to open our doors to the community and showcase the incredible progress and potential of Mesabi Metallics. These events are a great opportunity for the public to see firsthand the innovation, investment and hard work that’s helping shape the future of the Iron Range,” said Joe Broking, President & CEO of Mesabi Metallics. “We’re grateful to the 370 community members who attended our event to learn more about the project. The response is a testament to how important this project is to the region.”
“Mesabi Metallics represents a generational opportunity to bring jobs, growth and long-term stability to not only Nashwauk, but our entire region. It’s inspiring to see the project moving forward and to share that momentum with our community,” said Greg Heyblom, Mayor of Nashwauk and member of the Build Mesabi. Build Itasca! advisory council.
State legislators Senator Robert Farnsworth and Representative Cal Warwas attended the event.
“The strong turnout from the community tonight is evidence of the public support for this investment in Northern Minnesota’s future. At a time when the Iron Range has received plenty of bad news, the Mesabi Metallics project has the potential to provide good paying union jobs, increase county and school district funding, and encourage further outside investment in our communities,” said Senator Farnsworth.
“This project represents hope and progress for our region. The Mesabi Metallics site has the potential to bring real economic renewal to our communities. I’ll continue working to make sure our local voices are heard and our priorities are delivered,” said Representative Warwas.
Throughout the tour, guests had the opportunity to see firsthand how Mesabi Metallics is leading the way for the future of mining by producing Direct Reduction (DR) grade pellets that will power the global decarbonization of steel production and drive the Green Steel revolution. The party at the Mucho Si restaurant in Nashwauk following the tour gave attendees a chance to connect informally with Mesabi Metallics staff and learn more about the project’s progress and the potential it holds for the community.
