ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

At Mesabi Metallics, we are dedicated to minimizing our environmental footprint through cutting edge, environmentally friendly technologies and efficient resource management. We aim to earn the respect of the communities in which we operate, and we do right by the land that provides the resources to power our world.

Protecting Water Quality:

Mesabi will be the first zero-discharge mine built in Minnesota. Designed with a meticulous series of collection channels around our operations—the likes of which will be the first in the state—no Mesabi process water will enter Minnesota public waters.

The project will be completely water neutral—water requirements for the operations will be met by pumping water collected from storm water and recycling water from the tailing basin.

Protecting Air Quality:

The best-available air pollution control systems are included to ensure emissions are kept to a bare minimum.

Mesabi will use baghouses (with a control efficiency of 99% or higher) at all emission points, which include all ore processing and pellet indurating.

Mesabi will be one of only two mines on the Iron Range to use full enclosures for crushed ore stockpiles, reducing emissions from wind.

Mesabi will use state-of-the-art Activated Carbon Injection (ACI) to further control mercury emissions. ACI captures mercury in the fine pores of activated charcoal, which is subsequently removed from the waste stream.

Mesabi’s project will utilize electrically powered shovels and drills.

Using the most advanced pelletizing technology, Mesabi will optimize heat recovery within the indurating furnace by recuperating all heated process gas from the pellet cooling zone to reduce fuel consumption and atmospheric emissions.

Mesabi’s pellet furnace will utilize a hydrogen-based burner system as soon as economically feasible.
