[NASHWAUK, MN] – This week, Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (Mesabi Metallics) welcomed U.S. Representative Angie Craig on site to tour the project and learn more about Mesabi Metallics’ role in decarbonizing global steel production. During her visit, Congresswoman Craig toured the construction site and met with company leadership and community advocates for the project. Photos of the Representative’s visit are attached.
Mesabi Metallics is building one of the most advanced iron ore mining and Direct Reduction (DR) grade pellet production facilities in North America. Once completed, the project will play a central role in supplying low-carbon feedstock to electric arc furnaces, a critical step toward decarbonizing global steel production. The project will be Minnesota’s first new mine in nearly 50 years.
“We were honored to host Representative Craig and showcase the progress we’ve made toward opening Minnesota’s first new mine in 50 years,” said Joe Broking, President & CEO of Mesabi Metallics. “The Representative’s visit reinforces the importance of our mission to build a stronger, more sustainable future—right here in Minnesota.”
During her visit to Mesabi Metallics, Representative Craig emphasized the importance of investing in domestic Green Steel production to strengthen American supply chains and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while creating jobs and boosting the economy.
“It was great to see the operation at Mesabi Metallics firsthand,” said Representative Craig. “I’m proud of the work happening here in Minnesota to advance innovative projects that create good-paying jobs and move us closer to achieving our climate goals.”
“Representative Craig’s visit is a strong affirmation of the work we’re doing at Mesabi Metallics,” said Larry Sutherland, President & Chief Operating Officer of Mesabi Metallics. “Her support underscores the importance of decarbonizing steel production and the role our region plays in meeting our nation’s climate and manufacturing goals. We’re proud to show her firsthand how Minnesota’s Iron Range is driving innovation, creating jobs and building a stronger future.”
“Mesabi Metallics’ commitment to this region goes far beyond mining—it’s about creating opportunities for our students and future workforce,” said Barb Kalmi, Vice Chair of the Nashwauk-Keewatin School Board who joined Representative Craig for the tour of Mesabi Metallics. “Representative Craig’s visit reinforces how vital this project is to our community’s future. We’re excited for what it means for education and careers across the Iron Range.”
Mesabi Metallics is constructing a state-of-the-art mine to support a seven million ton per year beneficiation plant and a seven million ton per year pellet plant to produce premium DR grade pellets, strategically positioned to meet the demand of the Electric Arc Furnace market in the global transition to Green Steel. The company controls over 16,000 acres of land in Nashwauk and multiple decades of iron ore resources. The project is under construction and is on track to complete the project in the first quarter of 2026 and begin commercial operations. Mesabi Metallics has already invested more than $1.8 billion in this project and is further investing about $500 million to complete the project. The total investment of $2.3 billion will be one of the largest private investments ever made in Minnesota.
