[NASHWAUK, MN] – Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (Mesabi Metallics) last week welcomed St. Louis County Commissioners, leadership and staff to its project site in Nashwauk, Minnesota. The visit included a meeting with Mesabi leadership and an in-depth tour of construction progress, highlighting the primary crusher, secondary crusher and the concentrator building — the most sophisticated building on site. When operational, Mesabi Metallics will be the first new mine, beneficiation plant and pellet plant in Minnesota in nearly 50 years. Rooted in sustainability, the project will utilize cutting-edge techniques to transform iron ore into premium Direct Reduction (DR) grade pellets to supply the growing electric arc furnace market, also known as Green Steel production.
“Mesabi Metallics was pleased to host St. Louis County Commissioners, leadership and staff at our facility,” said Joe Broking, President & CEO of Mesabi Metallics. “Strengthening relationships at every level of government is central to our mission, and we were proud to showcase our work to leaders from a neighboring county. We look forward to continued collaboration as we grow together.”
St. Louis County Commissioners shared their impressions of the visit:
“It’s impressive to see firsthand the scale of investment happening in Nashwauk at the Mesabi Metallics project,” said Commissioner Annie Harala, Chair of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. “I appreciate the investment in Green Steel, as well as the family wage jobs that will come with it.”
“As a neighboring county, we value partnerships like this that bring long-term benefits to the entire Northland region,” said Commissioner Mike Jugovich, Vice Chair of the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. “This project represents an important opportunity for regional economic growth and good-paying jobs for our residents, while also advancing innovative practices that support sustainability.”
“The visit to Mesabi Metallics underscored the importance of public and private collaboration in moving our communities forward,” said Commissioner Paul McDonald. “We appreciate Mesabi Metallics opening its doors and sharing its vision for the future.”
