Our $18 billion investment across Minnesota and Iowa connects a new iron ore mine and pellet plant in Minnesota with a modern electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking complex in Iowa.
It is an integrated, all-American supply chain: iron ore mined in Minnesota, transformed into steel in Iowa and supplied to American manufacturers. By connecting the mine directly to the steelmaking complex, Mesabi Metallics is building new domestic capacity and reducing reliance on imported iron and steel.
The steel produced will support some of America’s most critical industries, including automotive, national defense, shipbuilding, electric vehicles, bridges, energy, grid modernization and critical infrastructure.

Mesabi Metallics is investing in workers, businesses and communities across Minnesota, Iowa and the Midwest — creating economic opportunity for generations.
The $18 billion investment includes approximately $3 billion in Minnesota to complete the company’s new iron ore mine and pellet plant and $15 billion in Iowa to build the new steelmaking complex.
Construction of the Iowa complex is expected to create more than 6,000 well-paying construction jobs. Once operational, the facility will employ approximately 1,750 people in high-wage, competitive-benefit positions, including skilled engineering, technology and steelmaking roles.
The economic impact extends far beyond Mesabi Metallics’ direct workforce. The project will support local suppliers, equipment and logistics companies, maintenance providers, downstream manufacturers and other businesses throughout Iowa and the broader Midwest.
During construction and the first 10 years of operations, the investment is expected to generate $95 billion in total economic output, supporting workers, businesses and communities across the region.
