[NASHWAUK, MN] – Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan recently visited Mesabi Metallics Company LLC (Mesabi Metallics) in Nashwauk to meet with leaders from the company and the community, tour the modern mining and pellet plant operations currently under development and underscore the State’s continued support for economic growth, job creation and responsible resource development on the Iron Range.
During the visit, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan emphasized the importance of projects like Mesabi Metallics.
Mesabi Metallics is one of the most substantial private investments in the state, a leader in sustainable manufacturing through cutting-edge technology and emissions reductions and a pivotal opportunity for the Iron Range.
“We’re here today because of what this project means — for the workers, for the families and for the future of the Iron Range,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “When we work together to both protect our environment and develop projects responsibly in partnership with industry, we build lasting opportunity. I’m proud that Minnesota is a place where that happens.”
Key highlights of the visit included:
- A guided tour of Mesabi Metallics’ mine, concentrator and pellet plant sites, where construction activity is ramping up with more than 550 workers on site daily.
- Discussions with company executives and local leadership about workforce development and community partnerships.
- A briefing on the company’s progress toward producing high-quality, Direct Reduction-grade iron ore pellets.
- Recognition of the project’s local economic impact: tax revenue, local hiring and infrastructure development on the Iron Range.
“As Mesabi Metallics moves closer toward full operations and prepares to hire our team of 350 full-time, high-paying and family-sustaining jobs, we are proud that the project continues to represent sustainable economic development in Minnesota,” said Joe Broking, President & CEO of Mesabi Metallics. “It was our honor to have the Lieutenant Governor on site, and we’re grateful to the State of Minnesota and to the local community for their support of this project.”
